At the "Lifting Our Voices: Discovering Hope" breakfast event in Midland, Michigan, former Detroit Lions quarterback Eric Hipple and juvenile justice director Ryan Griffus delivered powerful personal testimonies about mental health, trauma, and recovery. Hosted by the Great Lakes Bay Regional Mental Health Partnership, the event raised over $50,000 to expand mental health programs across four Michigan counties.
Griffus, who overcame homelessness and abuse during his youth, shared how stigma prevented him from speaking up during his darkest moments—despite outward appearances of success on the football field. Hipple echoed that theme, drawing from his own battles with depression and his transformation into a leading mental health advocate for veterans, athletes, and youth.
Together, their stories underscored the event’s mission: to foster a culture where seeking help is not just accepted, but encouraged. Their shared message was clear—asking “How are you doing?” can save a life.
